What Is a Child Personality Assessment?

A child personality assessment measures character traits — the values, motivations, and behavioural tendencies that shape how a child engages with the world. It is not an IQ test, a clinical diagnosis, or a Myers-Briggs personality type. The most widely validated framework for children is the VIA (Values in Action) Character Strengths model, developed by positive psychologists Dr. Martin Seligman and Dr. Neal Mayerson.

Unlike academic assessments — which measure what a child can do — a character strengths assessment reveals who they are: which traits they demonstrate most naturally, which deserve more development, and how those traits interact with their academic performance and social life.

Eduentry's free personality assessment is parent-rated: you answer on behalf of your child based on observed behaviour. This makes it accessible for children as young as 6 and removes the reading burden from younger children.

The 24 VIA Character Strengths Across 6 Virtues

The VIA framework organises 24 character strengths into 6 virtue categories. Every child has all 24 to varying degrees — the assessment identifies which are most prominent.

VirtueCharacter Strengths
WisdomCreativity, Curiosity, Judgement, Love of Learning, Perspective
CourageBravery, Perseverance, Honesty, Zest
HumanityLove, Kindness, Social Intelligence
JusticeTeamwork, Fairness, Leadership
TemperanceForgiveness, Humility, Prudence, Self-Regulation
TranscendenceAppreciation of Beauty, Gratitude, Hope, Humour, Spirituality

Research consistently links five of these strengths to academic outcomes: Curiosity and Love of Learning predict depth of engagement; Perseverance predicts performance under difficulty; Self-Regulation predicts study habits; and Zest predicts motivation and attendance. But all 24 matter — social intelligence drives peer collaboration, fairness shapes classroom behaviour, and hope predicts resilience after failure.

Why Character Strengths Matter for Children

A 2019 meta-analysis of 38 studies found that character strengths interventions in school settings produced significant improvements in academic performance, wellbeing, and engagement — independent of cognitive ability. A child with average cognitive scores but high perseverance and self-regulation consistently outperforms a child with higher cognitive scores but low self-regulation.

The practical implication: identifying and developing character strengths is not a soft alternative to academic work. It is a direct lever on academic outcomes, particularly as curriculum demands increase through secondary school and beyond.

How the Eduentry Personality Assessment Works

The assessment is divided into four age-calibrated tiers, each with a different question set and question count:

Age RangeTraits MeasuredQuestionsApprox. Time
6–912 core traits24 questions~5 min
10–1315 traits30 questions~7 min
14–1720 traits40 questions~9 min
18–20All 24 traits48 questions~11 min

Each question uses a 1–5 star rating scale. You rate how strongly the statement applies to your child's everyday behaviour — for example: "My child sticks with difficult tasks until they are finished." The parent-rating format is intentional: it captures observed behaviour rather than self-reported intentions, which produces more stable and actionable results for younger children.

What You Get: Signature Strengths vs Growth Areas

The report organises results into three layers:

  • ★
Signature Strengths (top 5): The traits your child demonstrates most naturally and consistently. VIA research shows that building on Signature Strengths produces faster development than targeting weaknesses directly.
  • ↑
Growth Areas (bottom 3): The traits with the most development potential. These are not deficits — every child has all 24 strengths to some degree. One focused Growth Area at a time, with a concrete activity, is the most effective approach.
  • ≡
Full 24-trait profile (account required, free): Shows scores for all 24 character strengths, peer benchmarking against your child's age group, and AI-generated development activities for each Signature Strength and Growth Area.

The AI-generated activities are age-specific and strength-specific. For a 10-year-old whose top strength is Curiosity, a typical activity might be: "After reading or watching something together, ask one open-ended question and leave a deliberate pause — let your child fill the silence with their own questions."

Personality Assessment vs Academic Assessment: What's the Difference?

These two assessments are complementary, not competing:

Personality AssessmentAcademic Assessment
What it measuresCharacter traits and valuesCognitive ability and reasoning skills
Who answersParent (observed behaviour)Child (interactive questions)
OutputSignature Strengths + Growth AreasStandardised score + percentile by subject
Best forMotivation, resilience, social skillsSubject readiness, 11+ prep, gifted screening
Ages6–206–17

Many parents run both: the academic assessment identifies where a child stands cognitively; the personality assessment identifies how they engage — their natural drive, their social approach, their resilience under pressure. Together, the two profiles give a more complete picture than either alone.

Next Steps

Once you have the report, read our guide on how to read your child's character strengths report — it covers how to interpret Signature Strengths, act on Growth Areas, and use the peer benchmarking data effectively. You can also explore how VIA character strengths predict academic and life outcomes for the research behind the framework.
